Safety & Skills Program (Paddle Canada Certification) - 3 days

Paddle Canada Certification - Sea Kayaking Skills Level 1
This program, presented over three days, is designed to provide paddlers with the skills necessary to embark safely upon day adventures in calm and relatively sheltered conditions. Successful candidates will be awarded the nationally recognized certification of Paddle Canada: Flatwater Sea Kayaking Skills / Sea Kayaking Skills Level I.

Location: FreshAir Adventure's home base in Alma

Cost: $325.00 + HST

What is Included: Equipment, lunches, BBQ at FreshAir Adventure's home base, Paddle Canada fees. We encourage participants to use their own boats as long as they are designed for open water. Rentals available if needed.

Lodging: Camping is available in Fundy National Park. We would be happy to suggest other accommodations in the area.

General Objectives:
Participants will develop and practice the following skills during on-water sessions:

  • Launch and landing techniques
  • Strokes - forward and reverse, turning, sideways displacement and recovery
  • Rescue - self and assisted
  • Towing
  • Boat tilt and edge control.
Theory sessions will include:
  • Equipment used in sea kayaking
  • Canadian Coast Guard policies and regulations, trip planning
  • Introduction to sea kayaking navigation and journeying (route selection, weather, chart and compass use, taking / following a compass bearing)

Day 1:  Evening (4:30 PM - 9:00 PM)

  • Paddle Canada - registration forms and procedures - certification

  • Preliminary rescue work

Day 2:  8:30 AM - 12:00 Noon
  • Canadian Coast Guard policies
    Equipment and selection
  • Paddles
  • Skirts
  • Personal flotation devices (PFD's)
  • Parts of the kayak
  • Kayak fit and design
  • Safety gear
  • Touring equipment and packing
    Water Session
  • Forward Stroke
  • Reverse Stroke
  • Stopping
  • Sweep Strokes
  • Re-visit Wet Exits and Assisted Rescues
Day 2:  12:00 Noon - 1:00 PM
