Covered Bridges of Albert County
On the Upper Bay of Fundy
Quoted from " In Our Own Back Yard" - Albert County Tourist Association

New Brunswick is famous for its covered bridges and Albert County is a great place to see a variety of them. They were constructed so as to prevent the rotting of the frame and floor by the sun, rain and snow and they were economical due to the abundance of local lumber. The style is Howard Truss.

Hartley Steeves Bridge - Salem - In 1923 a young bridge engineer named John Forbes came to Salem to construct a bridge over Welton Creek. He met a pretty girl there and fell in love. He built the 60 foot bridge and married the girl. The bridge was named for Hartley Steeves, but became known as the "Dan Cupid" bridge.

Sawmill Creek Bridge - was built in 1905 by A. E. Smythe. It was tendered in the amount of $2 975.00. It was 109 feet long and was replaced in 1994 by a modern crossing, however members of the Albert County Heritage Trust made it into a lovely picnic area.

Point Wolfe Bridge - Fundy National Park, is 95 feet long. It was built in 1908. In early years, it often suffered damage during the spring as the bottom boards were battered and broken by ice chunks rushing to the open sea. The bridge was destroyed by government road crews intending to blow up an unsafe section of a rocky ledge in 1990. Parks Canada was going to replace it with a typical cement structure, until Mary Majka intervened and eventually, they saw the wisdom of rebuilding it as it had been originally.

Bridge on the Forty-Five Road - was so named as it took 45 minutes from the time the logs were released on the Forty-Five River until they reached the mill in Alma. This bridge was built in 1914 and restored in 1986.

Germantown Brook Bridge - located at Midway, this bridge is visible from Route 114 after passing Riverside-Albert. It was built in 1903 and is 63 feet long.

Bridge at Crooked Creek - Turn into the Lumsden Road (to Crooked Creek Lookout) and follow the lower road along the creek. The bridge is relatively new, built in 1945.
